Square Grouper Contraband T-Shirt | Funny Offshore Fishing Shirt | Original Wood-Carved Fish Art

The rarest catch in the ocean—the legendary Square Grouper.

No size limit. No season. And you’re probably not going to find this one in a fish identification book.

The Square Grouper Contraband Folk Fish T-Shirt takes a legendary piece of offshore fishing folklore and turns it into an actual Folk Fish.

If you’ve spent enough time around fishermen, boat captains, marinas, or coastal towns, you may already know the joke.

And yes…

The fish is square for a reason.

WHAT THE HECK IS A SQUARE GROUPER?

Despite the name, a Square Grouper isn’t actually a grouper.

“Square Grouper” is old-school coastal and maritime slang for bales or packages of contraband lost, dumped, or tossed overboard by smugglers and later discovered floating at sea.

Over the years, stories of mysterious packages washing ashore or being spotted floating offshore became part of fishing and boating folklore.

Some fishermen went looking for grouper.

Some apparently found the square variety.

Folk Fish Studio decided to take the nickname literally.

What if the legendary Square Grouper were actually a fish?

That’s how this strange little character was born.

AN ACTUAL HAND-CARVED SQUARE GROUPER

The joke may come from offshore folklore, but the artwork is real.

The fish featured on this shirt originates from an actual wooden fish hand carved and hand painted by artist Jason Smith of Morrow, Ohio.

Jason first creates the Nassau Grouper as a physical piece of folk art, carving the fish from wood and individually painting it by hand.

That original three-dimensional carving is then transformed into the apparel artwork featured on the shirt.

So you’re not looking at another generic stock fishing graphic.

The artwork on the shirt comes directly from an actual hand-carved and painted Folk Fish.

A fictional fish…

Made into a real carving…

Made into a fishing shirt.

We probably made that more complicated than necessary.

CONTRABAND EDITION

The Square Grouper Contraband design leans into one of the stranger pieces of offshore fishing culture.

It’s part fishing shirt.

Part folk art.

Part maritime folklore.

And part inside joke for fishermen who know exactly why someone would call a suspicious floating package a “Square Grouper.”

The front keeps things subtle, while the larger Square Grouper artwork on the back tells the story.

Wear it offshore, around the marina, at fishing camp, on a coastal vacation, at the beach bar, or anywhere fishermen gather and start telling stories that probably shouldn’t be fact-checked..

Sometimes it’s a suspicious rectangular object floating offshore.
